For the celebration of the “100 Years of Photography LeicaValbray presents a special edition: the EL1 Chronograph. This special edition is limited to 100 copies. The timepiece presents the Leica logo on the crown and the engraving “100 Years of Leica Photography” on background glass.

The EL1 Chronograph is distinguished by the innovative sealing system Valbray, renamed Oculus. It can open and close with a simple manual rotation of the bezel. This mechanism consists of 16 integrated thin blades in a rotating bezel just 46mm in diameter.

The slats completely disappear at the opening of the diaphragm and reveals the unique design of this chronograph. When the diaphragm is closed, only the hour and minute hands are exposed while offering essential reading.

“The collaboration between Leica and Valbray combines two luxury brands sharing a passion for mechanical perfection and upscale crafts” said Alfred Schopf, president of Leica Camera AG management. The expert and passionate  of mechanical watch Alfred Schopfof has discovered in 2013 the Oculus system developed by Valbray and is still captivated. The founder of the brand Valbray, Côme de Valbray is passionated  about photography and is a Leica user since a long time.

They found together the foundation for the creation of the EL1 Chronograph, for a special edition on the occasion of the Centenary.

The watch is made of grade 5 titanium and sanded blasted. The watch has four white prints on its flange, on each time quarter. Dial details  are stylistic reminders of Leica cameras. The indication of the date (at 3), the cursor minutes (at 12), and hour (at 6) recall the settings layout . The cursor seconds (at 9) is inspired by the design of the settings isometry disk . 4.5 applique set at 4 hours and a half, remains the figure of the first Leica aperture .

The Swiss mechanical movement with a perforated rotor is visible through a smoked sapphire glass as the darkroom.

It’s launched in two references, 50 titanium and 50  black DLC treatment. Each chronograph is equipped with two different straps easily interchangeable with a special screwdriver which comes with the watch.

This limited edition chronograph Valbray EL1 will be available in Leica stores as well as in some Valbray retailers from June 2014 at a price of 17,999 euros.
