Oris : Swiss machines for real people

In 1904, the watch company Oris was founded by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian

in the small town Hölstein. They have taken over the company Lohner & Nägelin and began the manufacture of watches with 24 employees. Within the next seven years, the number of employees increased to 300 and the watch company Oris became the largest employer in the region. Until 1925, Oris specialized in the manufacture of relatively cheap watches but with a good quality. After the death of Georges Christian in 1927, the watch company was converted into a public limited company. In 1938 the Oris Pointer calendar movement was launched

which can be considered as a milestone in the company history. In 1944, the company is awarded by the Swiss Precious Metal Control. The quality of the gilding of the watch case is already regarded as a worldwide standard. In 1949, the watch company started to manufacture an alarm clocks that have a power reserve of 8 days. The automatic clock, with the movement 601, that was launched in 1952, is a popular watch until today. Oris 1970 was acquired by the todays Swatch Group (Holding ASUAG). Under the new leadership Oris had to specialize in the manufacture of cheap watches; a change that remained unsuccessful. Only from 1982 on, with the change of the Executive Board a new road was paved for Oris ; a change that helped them to became popular like today.

By 1996, Oris started with the sponsorship of various jazz artists

Annual jazz warches with a limited edition are dedicated to popular jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Miles David. Other well-known watches, that can be found on Chronollection are the Oris Artelier (new or used), the Wiliams F1 team (new or used), a watch that was made in honor of Ralf Schuhmacher and the F1 team and the dial is equipped with his signature; the Artix ( new or used), or the Aquis (new or used).
