nouvelle cartier drive extra-plate de cartier en or rose

Today we continue our series of posts dedicated to the new watches featured at SIHH 2017. This time we’re going to introduce the new Cartier Drive Extra-Flat, a watch that appealed to us thanks to its sleek design, elegant simplicity and as the name suggests, its thin size.

A stylish and thinner Cartier Drive

Far from thick conspicuous watches featuring dials packed with information, the Cartier Drive extra-flat goes back to the basics with its straightforward and subtle look. With its 39 mm white gold or pink gold case, this watch will perfectly fit classical and stylish wardrobes and would go well under a shirt and a blazer.

Only 6,6 mm thick, the Drive extra-flat went on a diet to be about 40% thinner than the first models of the range. This piece shows only what’s necessary, namely a black inner minute-circle surrounded by large roman numerals, the minute and the hour hands. This version also lets go of the central guilloché section in favour of a sleeker satin-finished dial.

Minimalism and elegant subtlety

The only touch of colour on the dial are the blue sword shaped minute and hour hands, brought out by the sapphire on the octogonal crown. An attention to detail that we’ve come to love from Cartier. We also like the simple elegance and the thinness of this piece which makes a great difference when worn. While definitely looking like a dress watch, the Drive distinguishes itselfs thanks to the soft cushion shape of its case. We might also note, that while marketed towards men, this model would make a fine unisex watch and we definitely could see it on a woman’s wrist.

Some connoiseurs might regret the absence of the small second and the date window featured on previous models, but if you are a fan of minimalism as much as we are you will probably be fine with the simplicity of this extra-flat. Also, let’s not forget that this watch required a special in-house 430 MC hand-winded movement, Cartier’s version Piaget’s 430P. Made up of 131 parts, it vibrates at 3 hz with a relatively low power reserve of 36 hours.

Available at Cartier for $16,700 and $15,600 in white gold and pink gold respectively.
