Michel Herbelin has a historical connection with the nautical world, and for the second consecutive year is renewing its partnership with the Porquerolles Classique, a large-scale regatta bringing together historic sailing boats of the utmost elegance, between 9 and 12 June 2016.
Taking advantage of this event, which perfectly embodies the values of the brand, the French watch maker is launching the Newport automatique open heart. With the visual pleasure of seeing its beating calibre, this new timepiece stylishly combines the sporting ethic and watchmaking technical excellence. For the gentlemen of the seas . . .
A marine allure
Equipped with a 40.3 mm steel case, adorned with a circular brushed bezel, this new Michel Herbelin remains true to the spirit of the Newport collection in its aesthetic inspired by the portholes of transatlantic liners. With a wave pattern stamp, at 12 o’clock, the dial reveals an opening into the mechanism, enabling its cogs to be admired in perpetual movement. Tapered like the hull of boat, the indexes are coated with a white luminescent material, as are the hour and minute hands, offering optimum visibility, even in the darkest conditions. Completing the ensemble, a timer, positioned on the rim flange, precisely punctuates the navigation of time, keeping your feet on the ground, (even when at sea!)
Functional down to the smallest detail, this watch is finished with a wristband in elastogator – a rubber imprinted like crocodile skin -, resistant to sea spray. Fixed by central attachments, the signature of the Newport collection, with its deep blue, reinforces the marine DNA of the model, while conferring upon it a resolutely sport chic allure.
An automatique team mate made in France
Heir to a tradition of French watch-making expertise, anchored in the Jura massif in the Franche- Comté since 1947, this new Newport has been designed, conceived, assembled, regulated and quality controlled in the workshops of the Michel Herbelin brand.
Water resistant to 100 metres, it houses a mechanical movement with automatic winding, of Swiss manufacture (Sellita SW 200), a guarantee of quality and precision. With 28,800 oscillations per hour and 26 rubies, it offers a power reserve of 38 hours. Purists will appreciate the transparent case bottom, rendering visible the “Côtes de Genève” (Geneva Stripes) motif decorating the oscillating weight.
A 14th edition for Porquerolles Classic in 2016
This event was created to celebrate the centenary of Moonbeam III, a 30 metre vessel launched in 1903 by the famous Scottish Fife boatyard. Organised by the Porquerolles (83) Yacht Club, this gathering is recorded on the official calendar of the AFYT, the Association Française des Yachts de Tradition [French Classic Yacht Association] bringing together owners of classic boats, who work to preserve these classic yachts and co-ordinate their activities.
This nautical event, which originally consisted of 11 boats, now hosts forty or so of the finest classic boats on the Mediterranean, which gather in the harbour of Hyères, and in the port of Porquerolles. The success of this regatta and the enthusiasm of the participants make it a significant rendez-vous which has now become an unmissable event in the nautical season on the Mediterranean. In 2016, the Porquerolles Classique will be celebrating its 14th presentation.
