Christopher Ward, young watchmaking brand, was created in 2004 by Mike France, Chris Ward and Peter Ellis during a boat trip on the Thames. All three of them being watchmaking fanatics, Mike, Chris and Peter wanted everyone to enjoy the pleasure of owning and wearing a premium quality Swiss-made watch. Aware that the high price of a luxury Swiss watch are part of marketing techniques, the three friends set out on a mission to carry on regardless the traditional model and make a revolution in watchmaking: create…”the cheapest most expensive watches in the world“.
The 3 founders have a strong interest in watchmaking, yet not previous experience. Nevertheless, the contacts they made throughout their business careers allowed them to acquire the necessary knowledge, an understanding of the first-cost principles of watchmaking that helped them define the business model which will guide the brand, as well as the access to premium manufacturing. In order to carry out their mission to create quality watches at accessible prices, they decide to sell them only on the internet.
After spending most of the first year designing the first two models, they decided to launch them on their website in June 2005. The reaction was not long in coming… worldwide aficionados couldn’t believe that watches so affordable were of high quality, until one of the world most influent bloggers bought a Christopher Ward timepiece, and, impressed by the quality, posted an complimentary comment. The brand was born.
The brand ateliers, based in Bienne in Switzerland, assemble Christopher Ward watches by hand. All of the movements used for its models are Swiss-made such as ETA, Sellita and Ronda, an indispensable condition for the creation of a quality pieces.
Today, the brand is proud of presenting its new collection, a redefined and re-engineered version of its iconic C60 Trident collection, enhanced by a set of innovations. The new arrivals include the C60 Trident COSC flagship, a chronometer version featuring Christopher Ward’s in-house movement, Calibre SH21, only the second model to bear this major innovation. Equally important, is the arrival of an entry-level quartz model, C60 Trident 300, using the Ronda 515 calibre.
To achieve the launch of this new collection, the brand made use of quality materials combining them with design and conception improvements, while preserving some features exclusive to the collection character such as the hands or wave pattern embossed dial.
The new Trident collection’s case clearly reminds the original case design but has been redefined in every aspect, particularly improved conception and finishing. The 3 mechanic versions are water resistant up to 600 mts, the quartz version is water resistant up to 300 mts. The case-back has also been redefined to show the Trident logo deep-stamped into the stainless steel plate giving a 3D appearance presented in the C65 Trident Classic model.
The 4 models of this new collection are offered with 2 case sizes, 38 or 42 mm, 8 different bezels and dial color combinations and 6 different straps sizes which give the brand aficionados 133 possible combinations of case, movement, colors bezel and strap, allowing them to create a unique model adapted to their personality. This is a huge step for the brand which from now on also addresses to women.
Mike France, co-founder of Christopher Ward, explains that the decision to revisit the Trident collection answers to a constant will to set up new challenges “this time deciding to review our best-selling range to see just how much higher we could take it in both technology and design. … The new Trident, remains true to its heritage, yet re-defines the model itself and brings more flexibility and affordability; in fact we believe it’s sets a new standard in the value quality equation for the industry”.
